Beautiful Bath Part 1

A while ago I presented Dave with a long list of places I wanted to visit before we left England.  Some of them were completely unrealistic, but this was a wishlist after all.  And Hilde added a few more important places to the list: India, Africa and Australia.  After some careful thought, Dave approved me planning some sort of excursion for the 3rd weekend of every month.  Hooray, now the planning could begin.  November brought Thanksgiving and Dave's trip to Rome and December was blocked with holiday festivities.  That meant our first trip was in January, over the MLK day holiday.

Bath is somewhere I have wanted to go to every since I read my first Jane Austen novel.  It was a fabulous place and we had a great time.

First we checked out the Abbey:

Then we headed over to the Roman Baths, where we discovered, much to our surprise, that our kids are BIG fans of audio tours.  The Roman Baths were so well done, it was fun for all of us.

After leaving the Baths we went over to drink the water.  Enoch said it tasted HORRIBLE.

Maybe the water is really good for you. It looks like it has a lot of minerals in it. Is it nice and warm too? I would just love it if this were the place where the word comes from for everyone's bathtime. Looks like Phinn in the carrier has his hand up to his ear too.

They are the most amazing Roman baths I've ever seen. Did they tell you the story of the local Prince Bladud who got leprosy in the 9th century BC? He was banished from court and became a swineherd. He noticed his pigs coming out with beautiful skin when they got in the muddy springs. He tried it, was cured and returned to be king!

I didn't get to the Jane Austen Museum there, but someone who did said there were more pictures of Colin Firth than Jane Austen in the souvenir shop...

Janet - my hands were too tied to get much of the history stuff, but I think I would have remembered that story! I can see why Colin would be more prevalent than Jane - I think he single handedly increased the interest in her works exponentially!

Carol - It is definitely full of minerals and the water was steaming, it looked pretty hot.
