October Blows
Today was cold, rainy and VERY blustery. Hilde and I raced to the car this evening and the wind nearly blew her over. She thought it was the funniest thing EVER. Dave promises that the whole winter will be like today was, only darker. All of the Brits and long term expats tell us the sun will come up after we are at work and go down before we leave. We will have to plan "sun breaks" into our daily schedule and just hope it isn't too cloudy to see it. In general, that doesn't sound all that bad to me, and it is just such a great place to live, I am willing to deal with it. (Ask me to revisit this topic in February and see if I have changed my mind). With it being so cold outside, when we got home Dave started a big batch of Vegetable Stock in preparation of making minestrone soup tomorrow. That sounds so perfect for the weather, and I am counting down the minutes. With many more days like this to come, I need to stock up on ideas for warming us all up at dinner time. So, what is your favorite cold/rainy/snowy/windy day meal? What do you crave to help you warm up? We are sure to use all of the suggestions!

For me, Dinty Moore is the ultimate cold weather food.
Sounds a lot like Seattle- hey, remember you said you were looking forward to this time of year!
Stephen's Hot Chocolate for SURE!
Soup- yes! And pumpkin biscuits, and cinnamon rolls. (Recipe for such biscuits available in the forthcoming family cookbook.)
Apple cider heated on the stove. Makes a nice pre-dinner warmup.
Hot water bottle tucked between the sheets down where your feet are going to go, about 20 minutes before you snuggle in.
Got a bread machine? You could set it up before you go to work and have a hot loaf ready when you walk in the door. That smell alone warms the whole house.
We like Near East's vegetarian chili mix that comes in a box. Tastes meaty but there's no meat, and it's ready in 20 minutes.
Baked potatoes (or sweet potatoes) in the microwave (don't they call them "jacket potatoes" over there?) are a quick and easy satisfying meal on a dreary day.
Just some of my favorites.
We have jacket potatoes in the oven right now. The English usually eat them with baked beans on top. They are crazy about their baked beans. I think we will do butter, cheese, sour cream, etc. Like normal people... We have had two bread machines during our marriage, and neither worked. 3 out of 4 times the loaf just wouldn't rise at all. We bought all new yeast, tried different bread machine mixes, everything, no luck. So if you have a good bread machine that you love, let us know. Someday we may get brave enough to try it out!
Good suggestions everyone, we will definitely be using them.
