First Day at School

Today was Hilde's very first day at school. We had grand plans to put her into a private school here, but decided that logistically it made much more sense for her to attend a British Public School, Darley Primary School. We went and met with the headmistress on Friday and they enrolled her for today. We spent the weekend finding all of the components to her uniform. The hardest things to find were actually her PE clothes (plain white tee shirt, plain navy blue shorts, all black tennis shoes). Sunday night she laid out all of her clothes for the week. Here she has the red sweater and white dress shirt. She also has a navy blue sweater and a few white polo shirts. She had a lot of fun putting together all of the combinations. Apparently they are having a school contest to design a new logo for next year, so they told us to get everything generic. Next year her clothes will have the school logo on them as well. I already love uniforms, it was so much easier getting her dressed this morning.

We started off with a bowl of Honey Bunches of Oats, one of her favorite cereals. Then we got her school bag ready with her lunch money, PE clothes, and all of the paperwork we had to fill out for her school. Then we all piled into the car and headed off. We dropped Enoch off at daycare along the way so it would be a special morning with us and Hilde. We parked a little ways from the school (there is no parking there) and walked the rest of the way to the school. We waited with the other parents and kids in the courtyard for the teachers to open the doors. Each class has a door that leads to the courtyard and when the teacher is ready they let the kids in.

Hilde could hardly stand the wait. While we were there, several parents introduced themselves and had their kids introduce themselves to Hilde. It was probably 50/50 US/Brits. Then the moment arrived.... and Mrs. Henry opened up the door to Hilde's class. Hilde started to sprint inside and I told her I wanted to get one more picture. She wasn't very excited about that - as you can see. She just wanted to be a part of the action, and from what we can tell, she was. Before we left we got some big hugs and kisses and huge smiles from a very excited little girl.

I picked her up at the end of the day and met with Mrs. Henry for about 40 minutes. She said Hilde had a great time, and fit right in. Hilde couldn't stop bouncing off the walls, she was so excited and happy. Mrs. Henry gave me her Homework Diary and her first homework assignment - draw a picture of your favorite toy. Each homework assignment is for the whole week, so she has all week to complete it. Hilde has decided she is going to draw a princess that twirls, like in her music box. Congratulations Hilde, you are a big girl now!!!

A few more pics from when I picked her up at the end of the day.

How cute! How long is she in school until- the end of June? Is it the equivalent of kindergarten?

My questions, exactly. She looks so happy! I love the uniform thing. By the way, Land's End (the ultimate in boring clothes, yet I love them) has a special section of just uniform items. Don't know if that would help- it sounds like maybe you have what you need. It's nice to have familiar food, too!

I'm surprised how proud I feel. It has nothing to do with me and I can take no credit, but I'm really proud anyway! Way to go Hilde!! We love you!

Hi,

Dave's friend Davey here,

I couldn't get over the uniform description for one specific point:

All Black Tennis Shoes.

We were never allowed all black tennis shoes! Those were the shoes we all wanted! But the P.E. Teacher said they would mark up the floor, so we always had to buy lame tennis shoes with "non marking soles" or some such! Almost 15 years since I last took gym and I'm still jealous of Hilde and her awesome shoes.

School goes until July 18th, so she will be in for a few months. Then a short break and school starts back up again on September 2(?). Good to know about Lands End, I haven't gone there in a while but have some essentials we will need, and that is just the place to get them.

Matt - I read Hilde your comment and she asked me when we are going to the Beach House. You will always be her beach buddy.

I know what you mean Davey. When they told us all black "pumps", I nearly said, "are you kidding me?" But we were talking to the headmistress, and for some reason I almost felt 10 again, so I refrained.

So sweet I am crying! What a big girl and somehow a uniform makes her seem even bigger and older. Sunday is my favorite day to pick the kids' clothes; beyond that I'm starting to get tired of the decisions every day - can't keep up with my own high expectations for cuteness so uniforms sound like the perfect solution. Maybe we'll start instigating that here at home, never mind school. I wear basically the same stained t-shirt and faded pants every day anyway. I love this post! Have you guys found a home yet? Can't wait for the next installment!

What a cutie! I think I would love the ease of uniforms as well. It's so no surprise that Hilde fit right in. So cute that she loves Honey Bunches of Oats. I also love the "Homework Diary" instead of notebook. She's such a happy little girl!!!
