Rhodes Part Deux

While we were driving around the island of Rhodes on our way to Rhodes Town, Dave wanted to stop and see this little castle in Monolithos. It is a 15th century castle perched on a sheer 240-meter high rock and reached via a dirt track.  To enter, you climb through a hole in the wall.  The drive was gorgeous, these pictures were taken out our car window.  Unfortunately, it was raining pretty heavily and Phinn fell asleep right before we got there, so only Dave and Enoch went up to the castle and did some exploring.  Their pictures are great though.

Next we headed over to the port of Rhodes.  This is where the famed Colossus of Rhodes was.  Built between 292 and 280 BC, the Colossus was a Statue of Helios standing over 107 feet high - making it one of the 7 Wonders of the Ancient World.  It was destroyed so long ago, that nobody really knows what it looked like, they rely on some handwritten accounts of people who saw it before it was destroyed, but they are often conflicting.  And although most people believe the Colossus was at the port, they aren't entirely sure about that either.  It was a beautiful day when we visited.  Lots of boats selling tours to tourists.  A couple of cruise ships were docked at the port itself.

The best looking guys at the port.
